The Accidental Memoir: HORN_Emma [2015] Literary Journalism thesis

In the final year of my Bachelor of Arts (Media & Communications) degree at the University of Sydney, I wrote a 5,000 word thesis the use of literary traditions in the media.

Under the supervision of Dr. Fiona Giles, the project interrogates the boundaries between fact and fiction when an author decides to write their own story into a fictional narrative landscape.

In order to streamline the discussion, this thesis uses two books, Kathryn Stockett’s The Help and Helen Garner’s The Spare Room, as case studies.

ACMA versus Australia

As the capstone to my degree, I also wrote a 4,500 word research project on ethics in the media.

This project probes into the relationship between the Australian Communications Media Association (the ACMA) and 2DayFM following the 2012 Royal Baby Scandal.

The idea for this project came after I spent a week interning in the 2DayFM Sydney newsroom.

Due to the sensitive nature of this topic, this project will not be published here, but can be viewed upon request.
